Best Day Trips from Athens by Private Car
Athens is a good base for seeing more of Greece, because several famous sites sit within a day’s reach. The hard part is choosing, since a coast drive to Sounio and a long road north to Meteora are very different days. This guide compares the main day trips from Athens by car, using the durations and stops from our private tours from Athens. It helps you pick one, and our separate guides go deeper on the two longest trips.
Day trips compared at a glance
| Destination | Time for the day | Main stops | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cape Sounio | About 4 hours | Coast road, Temple of Poseidon | A short first trip |
| Delphi | About 8 hours | Sanctuary, museum, Arachova, Osios Loukas | Ancient history and mountains |
| Argolis | About 8 hours | Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Nafplio, Epidaurus | Several sites in one day |
| Olympia | A long full day | Temple of Zeus, Temple of Hera, stadium, museum | Fans of the Olympic Games |
| Meteora | About 12 hours | Rock monasteries, Kalambaka, Thermopylae | Landscape and monasteries |
Durations and stops come from our own tour pages.
Cape Sounio and the Athens coast
This is the easiest trip to fit in. The road follows the Saronic Gulf past Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Lagonissi and Anavyssos, and it ends at the Temple of Poseidon at the southern edge of Attica. Our Sounio half day tour takes about 4 hours. It leaves time for a meal at a traditional tavern in the area on the way back.
If you have only one free day and want both the city and the sea, the Athens and Sounio full day tour combines them in about 8 hours. KTEL Attica buses also run to Sounio, mainly from Pedion Areos (Visit Greece).
Delphi in brief
Delphi sits on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, and the ancient Greeks called it the navel of the Earth. A day here means the Sanctuary of Apollo and the museum, often with lunch in the mountain village of Arachova. It is the best pick if you want one major archaeological site without the longest drive. Bus times, tickets and how long to stay are in our guide to a Delphi day trip from Athens.
Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Nafplio and Epidaurus

This route packs the most stops into one day. The Corinth Canal comes first, about an hour from Athens. Ancient Corinth follows, with the Temple of Apollo. At Mycenae you see the Lion Gate, the Cyclopean Walls and the tomb of Agamemnon. Nafplio is the lunch stop, with its Venetian fortress and the castle of Bourtzi on an islet in the harbor, and the ancient theater of Epidaurus closes the day.
It is a lot to see in one go, so a driver helps. You do not have to read road signs or find parking at each site. Our Nafplio, Mycenae and Epidaurus day tour lists about 8 hours.
Ancient Olympia

Olympia lies in a green valley between the Alfeios and Kladeos rivers. You can walk the Olympic stadium, see the temples of Zeus and Hera and visit the archaeological museum. The Olympic flame is still lit here at the altar of the Temple of Hera. Details are on our Ancient Olympia tour page. Plan this one for a day when you can start early.
Meteora in brief
Meteora is the most striking landscape of the group, with monasteries built on top of giant rocks, and it is also the farthest trip from Athens. Allow about 12 hours by car. An overnight stay is also an option, but a single day works if you check monastery opening days first. We compare the train, the bus and the car in our guide on going from Athens to Meteora.
Why go by private car
Public transport reaches the main towns, but it follows a fixed timetable and it does not link several sites in one day. A car starts from your hotel or from any place you choose, and it can leave you anywhere you want on the way back. That matters most on routes with several stops, such as Argolis. It also helps families with children and groups who want to travel together, and our fleet includes vans.
Taxi apps do not fit this kind of day, as we explain in our guide to Uber in Athens. If you are still deciding, see all our tours from Athens or contact us with your dates. If you only have a morning, our Athens half day tour stays inside the city, and you can book a car for any other ride. Arriving by ship? Our guide to the Athens cruise port shows what fits into one day from Piraeus.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best day trip from Athens?
It depends on your time. Cape Sounio is the easiest, at about 4 hours. Delphi is the classic choice for ancient history, at about 8 hours. Meteora has the most dramatic scenery, but it takes about 12 hours. For most first visits, Delphi gives the best balance of time and sights.
What are the best places to visit near Athens for a day trip?
The closest is Cape Sounio and the Temple of Poseidon on the Attica coast. Further out are Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Nafplio and Epidaurus in the Peloponnese, and Delphi on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Olympia and Meteora are also possible, though both make for a long day.
What is the best road trip to take from Athens?
For a short drive, take the coast road to Sounio past Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Anavyssos. For a full day, the Argolis route has the most variety, with the Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Nafplio and Epidaurus. A driver lets you look at the view instead of the road.
How do I get to Sounio from Athens?
You can go by car along the coast road or take a KTEL Attica bus, which runs mainly from Pedion Areos or the southern coast of Athens (Visit Greece). Our Sounio half day tour picks you up from your hotel and takes about 4 hours in total.
Is it worth visiting the Temple of Poseidon?
Yes, especially if you want a short trip out of the city. The temple stands at the southern edge of Attica with a wide view over the Saronic Gulf and its small islands. The drive there follows the coast, so the trip itself is part of the day.
How do I get from Athens to Nafplio?
KTEL buses connect Athens and Nafplio daily, and the trip takes about 1.5 to 2 hours (Visit Greece). By car you can stop on the way at the Corinth Canal and Mycenae. Our day tour links these stops with Nafplio and Epidaurus in about 8 hours.
Is Nafplio in Greece worth visiting?
Yes. Nafplio has a Venetian fortress above the town and the castle of Bourtzi on a small islet in the harbor, and it is a good place for lunch. It also sits close to Mycenae and Epidaurus, so you can see all three in one day from Athens.
