Athens to Meteora in One Day: Train, Bus or Private Car
Meteora is one of the most striking places in Greece, and it is also a long way from Athens. A one day trip works, but only if you plan around the timetable and the monastery opening days. This guide compares the train, the direct bus and a car, with the real times we checked. If you want the simplest version, our Meteora full day tour from Athens takes about 12 hours door to door.

Athens to Meteora by train
Kalambaka is the station for Meteora. When we searched the Hellenic Train booking system for 3 November 2026, it offered two trains from Athens, at 06:58 and 17:58. The 06:58 is the only one that works for a day trip. It runs as IC 50 to Palaiofarsalos, arriving at 10:00. You then change at 10:30 to a connecting bus, which reaches Kalambaka at 12:30. The trip back leaves at 16:50 and reaches Athens at 21:58, for €30.90 each way (Hellenic Train).
That leaves about 4 hours and 20 minutes in Kalambaka. You still need transport from the town up to the monasteries, and the Great Meteoron closes at 15:00 in summer and 14:00 in winter. Times change with the season, so search your own date before you plan around them.
Athens to Meteora by direct bus
KTEL Trikala runs a direct bus to Kalambaka and Meteora at 06:30 from Monday to Saturday, and the return leaves at 17:45 on the same days. To board in Athens, ride metro Line 1 from Monastiraki towards Kifissia to Kato Patissia. Exit the station and cross the bus stop, where a person holding a KTEL sign waits for passengers (KTEL Trikala). The operator’s sheet does not print the running time, so ask when you buy your ticket. A single costs €36.30 and a return costs €63.20 (KTEL fares).
Athens to Meteora by private car

A car solves the two weak points of public transport. You do not have to fit your day around one train, and you do not need a separate ride from Kalambaka to the monasteries. Our tour page lists 12 hours and includes Kalambaka, where you can try traditional Greek food, and the historic site of Thermopylae. The page shows a starting price of €650. Tell us when you book which day you plan to travel, so we can check opening days. You can compare this with shorter trips in our guide to the best day trips from Athens.
Monastery opening days and dress code
Six monasteries still operate at Meteora, out of thirty on record, and UNESCO listed the area in 1988 (Visit Greece). Each one sets its own days. This is the schedule of the largest, the Great Meteoron (Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron).
| Season | Open | Closed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 April to 31 October | 09:30 to 15:00 | Tuesday |
| 1 November to 31 March | 09:30 to 14:00 | Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday |
The monastery also closes on 5 to 7 August, 30 September and 1 October, and for the whole of February. It can change the schedule, so check before you travel.
Dress respectfully. Great Meteoron does not admit men in shorts, bermudas or sleeveless shirts, and it does not admit women in trousers or sleeveless tops. Pack a long skirt and something to cover your shoulders, whatever the weather.
What to expect at Meteora

Meteora has over 800 dark monoliths between the Koziakas and Antichasia mountains, and it is the largest monastic center in Greece after Mount Athos (Visit Greece). The first hermits lived in caves that they reached by rope ladders (Great Meteoron). Today trails wind between the rocks, and climbers come here too.
In one day, aim for one or two monasteries and a viewpoint rather than all six. If you only have one free day and the long road feels like too much, a Delphi day trip from Athens takes about 8 hours instead. Otherwise, see our private Meteora tour or contact us with your date. For a ride inside Athens before or after, you can book a car online.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do a day trip to Meteora from Athens?
Yes, but it is a long day. The train gives you about 4 hours and 20 minutes at Kalambaka, and a private car takes about 12 hours door to door. Check opening days first, because the Great Meteoron closes on Tuesdays and opens only four days a week in winter.
Is there a train between Athens and Meteora?
Yes, to Kalambaka, the town below Meteora. On the date we checked, the 06:58 from Athens reached Kalambaka at 12:30, with a change at Palaiofarsalos to a connecting bus, for €30.90 (Hellenic Train). The trip back left at 16:50. Search your own date, because times change.
Is there a direct bus from Athens to Meteora?
Yes. KTEL Trikala runs a direct bus to Kalambaka and Meteora at 06:30 from Monday to Saturday, and it returns at 17:45. You board near Kato Patissia metro station. A single costs €36.30 and a return costs €63.20, according to KTEL Trikala.
How much time do you need to see Meteora?
One day is enough for one or two monasteries and a viewpoint, which is our suggestion rather than an official figure. The Great Meteoron opens from 09:30 until 15:00, or until 14:00 in winter. To visit more monasteries or walk the trails, stay overnight in Kalambaka.
Can you visit Meteora without a guide?
Yes. The Great Meteoron visiting rules mention opening times and dress, and they do not ask for a guide. You can arrive on your own by bus, train or car. A driver helps with the distance between the town and the monasteries, and with fitting several stops into the day.
How do you get up to Meteora Monastery?
Hermits once reached their cave dwellings by rope ladders (Great Meteoron). Today you go by road from Kalambaka, and trails also wind between the rocks (Visit Greece). Ask at the monastery about access if you have limited mobility, since these sites sit high on steep rock.
Can a woman wear pants to Meteora?
Not at the Great Meteoron. Its rules say women may not enter in trousers or sleeveless tops, and men may not enter in shorts, bermudas or sleeveless shirts. Carry a long skirt and something to cover your shoulders, and put them on before you reach the door.
