Does Uber Work in Athens? How the App Works in the City
Yes, Uber works in Athens, with one difference that surprises many visitors. You do not get a private driver in a private car. The app sends a licensed local taxi, and the fare follows the same regulated tariff as a taxi you hail in the street. This guide explains how that works in the city, what you pay and which other apps you can use. If you want a driver and a set price instead, our private transfer service covers rides across Athens.
How Uber works in Athens
The Uber site for Greece describes the Taxi option as a way to request a local taxi and pay through the app (Uber Greece). The airport operator confirms that Uber in Athens works with licensed taxi drivers (Athens International Airport). So the yellow cab that stops for you is the same kind of car you see at any rank. That also means a drivers’ strike reaches the app, as our guide to the Athens taxi strike explains.
The steps are the ones you know from home. Enter your destination, confirm the ride and wait for a nearby driver to accept. The app notifies you when the driver is close. Before you get in, check the driver’s name, the vehicle details and your destination, as Uber asks you to do. You can also rate the trip and tip in the app. Uber Reserve lets you book up to 90 days ahead.
What a city ride costs on the meter
Taxi fares in Greece are set by ministerial decision, and the latest one came out in September 2026 (Government Gazette). These are the charges that apply on the meter in the city.
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Flag fall when the trip starts | €1.80 |
| Per kilometre, tariff 1 | €0.90 |
| Per kilometre, tariff 2 | €1.25 |
| Minimum fare | €4 |
| Hire from a port, railway station or intercity bus station | €1.07 extra |
| Waiting while the car stands still during the trip | €20 per hour |

By our own sum, a 5 kilometre ride on tariff 1 comes to about €6.30 before traffic time. The app is a way to order and pay. It does not create a separate, cheaper type of car. If your trip starts or ends at the terminal, read our guide to the Athens airport taxi, because that route has its own fare rules. Cruise and ferry passengers will find the port trip in our guide from Piraeus port to the airport. If your ferry leaves from another port, see our guide from Athens airport to Rafina and Lavrio ports.
Other ride apps in Athens
Uber is not the only app in the city, and the others are worth a look when a ride is slow to appear.
- Bolt. Bolt lists Athens among its cities and offers rides there (Bolt Athens). It shows an upfront price estimate once you enter your destination, and you can reserve up to 90 days ahead. Card payment works in the app, and cash depends on the location (Bolt Greece).
- Freenow. Freenow is a taxi app that describes itself as the number one in Greece and offers taxi trips without cash (Freenow Greece).
- Taxiplon. This Greek taxi app is on the App Store and works in Athens.
Download one or two before you land, so you can add a card on hotel Wi-Fi. You can also hail a free taxi in the street or walk to a rank, which needs no phone at all.
When the metro or a walk makes more sense
Central Athens is compact, and the main sights sit close to metro stations. A car is rarely the quickest way across the center in traffic. OASA sells a 90 minute ticket for €1.20 and a 3-day tourist ticket for €20. The tourist ticket covers buses, trolleys, trams and the metro, and it includes one return trip to the airport by metro or express bus (OASA). If you plan to take the airport line, our guide from the airport to the city center sets out each option.
An app taxi fits best late at night, with heavy bags, or for a neighbourhood far from a station. Share it with two or three people and the fare per person falls too.
When to book a car with a driver

An app gives you the next free taxi. Some trips need more planning than that:
- You have an early pickup at your hotel and cannot risk waiting for a driver to accept.
- Your group needs a van, so one taxi will not fit everyone and the bags.
- You want a fixed price in advance, shown before you pay.
- You plan to leave the city for the day. The taxi waiting charge is €20 per hour, so an app taxi is the wrong tool for a long stop. Our guide to day trips from Athens covers those plans.
Unique Transfers & Tours runs Mercedes-Benz cars and vans with English-speaking chauffeurs. You can book a car online in a few steps, or contact us if your plans are complicated.
Frequently asked questions
Is Uber available in Athens?
Yes. Uber is available in Athens, and the app lists Ride, Reserve and Taxi options for Greece. The rides come from licensed local taxi drivers rather than private cars, according to Athens International Airport. You request the car and pay for it in the app, as you would at home.
What is the Greek version of Uber?
Greece has no separate version of Uber, because Uber itself runs with licensed taxis here. The closest local options are taxi apps. Freenow describes itself as the number one taxi app in Greece, and Taxiplon is a Greek app. Bolt also offers rides in Athens.
Are Ubers reliable in Athens?
We know of no official figure on waiting times. The driver is a licensed taxi driver, and the app shows the name, vehicle details and route, so you can check them before you get in. For a fixed time, such as an early hotel pickup, a pre-booked car removes the wait for a driver to accept.
Does Athens have Bolt or Uber?
Athens has both. Uber connects you with licensed local taxis, and Bolt lists Athens among its cities with rides available in its app. Bolt shows a price estimate once you enter your destination. It is worth installing both and comparing them when you need a ride.
How expensive is Uber in Greece?
Uber fares in Athens follow the taximeter. The official tariff from September 2026 has a €1.80 flag fall, €0.90 or €1.25 per kilometre and a €4 minimum fare (Government Gazette). By our own sum, a 5 kilometre ride on the lower rate costs about €6.30 before traffic time.
What is the best way to get around Athens, Greece?
In the center, walk and use the metro, because the main sights sit close to stations. A 90 minute ticket costs €1.20 and a 3-day tourist ticket costs €20 (OASA). Use a taxi or an app late at night or with heavy bags, and book a car with a driver for groups or day trips.
How much is a 3-day metro pass in Athens?
The 3-day tourist ticket costs €20 full price (OASA). It runs for 72 hours from first validation on buses, trolleys, trams and the metro. It also includes one return trip to the airport by metro or express bus, which makes it good value if you arrive by air.
